I used to go to Norwich back in the day before I was asked to leave. Can someone send me a photo of "The Mechanics" that has been torn from the year books on campus? I know there was an image briefly made available here but now it's gone. If anyone has it please email me at bjl@mail.sfsu.edu Thanks

I find this all jovial and humorous. Everyone is trying to find a SECRET, find a METHOD, and if they can't join, start a false new group on truths they have little knowledge.. The TRUTH is with the chosen, no matter which society. If you were not, stop whining, there was probably something in your morals, soul, or bones which made you the less appealing. This is fascist in opinion, but if it were communism we would all be the same. Something Norwich has transitioned to lately. The societies have a purpose and have proven over time, Sons of Liberty, Masonic order ...etc.. It was not the king's domain (past) nor the President of the University(present) who should monopolize free thinking, and destroy all free thinking men and societies from pushing the common core of democracy... The groups, all of them, should unite and take Norwich back.. as "those who are faithful to the Future" rule right now.. and the "past" has been targeted.. All the groups fight for tradition and past.. The new admin is an abomination to what made Norwich great.... It will reap what it sows. "the focus of money brings ruin"...". "The focus of of the soul and heart brings a caring success."(from a brother of 192)... 192, 572, 314, 683, 111, 145, etc....and all the others that made Norwich, Norwich.. Thank you...
Take care brothers and sisters..
Lest us all join and fight the true decay of Norwich.. 192 and 572 may need to reunite again and destroy those who have targeted and monopolized Norwich into a failure of hypocricy..

What a load of horsenutse. What makes your 20-30k a year that you spent any more special than the 'unchosen' ones. Jackass.

I am a current cadet at NU and am disappointed in the loss of tradition even I am aware of. I know that this knowledge is very limited and that there are things that have gone on far past what I know...I would like to know more about this because I place high value on tradition and remembering where you come from/the past. I feel like Norwich has lost touch with what it is supposed to be. If anyone could give me any information on S&S, Night Riders, the tunnels, original companies/old traditions, etc. I can be reached at lmccarthy02169@yahoo.com

Go to the Archives Lisa. Look under Harmon's archives. You'll find some interesting things.

Don't bother looking into or inquiring about the mechanics, all you need to know is they fixed things. Whatever was broken they fixed. You try and decipher what that means. All I know is that they were some of the best guys and friends that you could ever want to have. Well said

When Thea chi went away they became the Mechanics, the Mechanic split into the Night Riders and Skull and Swords. Mystery solved. Don't believe me? There's tons of proff.

Post by 572 back at NU on Nov 14, 2014 12:06:04 GMT -5
At the Veterans Day event at NU this past week there was definitely a major presence of the Skull and Swords and it was quite obvious. I saw them in the bookstore and ne of the older grads had a pin on his suit that was clearly Skull and Swords. He looked like a menacing dude, clearly prior mil with a Special Forces look about him. A few of us followed them up to the UP and they were right up front at the parade in the VIP viewing section. Clearly they had a cozy relationship with all the mucky mucks including the president and other NU dignitaries. Also spent a lot of time around and with Gen Sullivan and Gen Powell.....and there were others with him. These 3 or 4 guys all looked like they were about 50 but clearly stood out in the crowd and the way they carried themselves. Down at the field house for Gen Powell’s speech they were front and center in the VIP section there to? And you’re telling me Skull and Swords is gone and has no role? Someone else in this post mentioned a S&S scholarship and when I looked it up, there it is right there on the NU website. Welcome back 572...you’ve been missed.

S&S never left...

S&S were glorified bail bondsmen in the period of at least 1979-81. In fact the "secret" society really had no affect on the corps of cadets. In 78-79 it was a very rough year for the corps. At the S&S parade at the end of that year, the Regimental Staff was laughing as they named all the new members (79-80) before they were announced. Let's see we had to have a football player, a hockey player, a guy going in the Marines, two or three "pinheads" who talked the talk but couldn't walk the walk, and the staff was 100% on the money making the picks. At that point everyone knew it was a joke and who you knew not your loyalty to the school. -I've read more of the thread since my last visit and wanted to relate an incident from the past. And as an aside, Nu Old School, you and I might know each other. For the record, when I was Rook, the '79-'80 crop of S&S saved my a$$ one night up in Montpelier. Not too long after being recognized (if memory serves we didn't get recognized until almost February that year) three of us rooks got into a for real, seriously life-threatening bind in Montpelier. The S&S phone number was in the back of our pink rook books, we dialed it, and I'm here today because of it. We were in civies, and thank God one of us had a rook book with us. As for my statement above about the S&S never leaving: I stand by it but will not elaborate.

I know an alumnus from Norwich (class of 77), and upon looking in his senior year book, i saw in the back in the activities section...the skull and swords. it strikes me as a little strange that in 1977 the skull and swords was looked at along the same lines as IEEE or another respectable organization. my question is, when did the skull and swords turn into a "secret" society? and what led up to it? Thanks I attended Norwich Military College in 1989 and I remember sitting in a Skull and Swords meeting with the rest of my freshmen class. I didn't realize that they became a secret society after that. My Captain was a member (Captain Strong)
