Was on the Hill from 96-98...
My Rook year the S&S were still in full control of the UP, I had to leave due to costs of my education there (being out of state). But, I remember very vividly my entire Class being visited by the S&S one night (late late one night) due to an issue that happened on the Hill with one of our classmates. We were summoned to the lines and were told to assume the position (ie, get on our faces - push-up style) and were then lectured by a few of the members. We only saw their feet and were not allowed to look up as to identify the upperclassmen. They got the info they needed and the matter was dealt with. Later that year, I was passed on the "Red Lyre" out of Band Co., which found a new home before my departure. Current Rooks and Cadet's may find this an interesting crumb trail into the History at the 'Wic! A History many may need to rekindle in these darker days

heavy interest in the history of Norwich. it seems that S&S still thrives at Norwich. one of my rook buddies best friends was killed during the first month and rookdom, he and his family didnt have enough money to fly him to georgia for the funeral services. the night before he wouldve gone home, an envelope with money, plane ticket and itinerary slid under his door. our cadre could barely afford their rings and no one in our platoon had the money. seemed very strange. a couple kids in my platoon went digging and found a tunnel somewhere on campus. the honor board chair my rook year also got removed and no one even knows why. all this seems very odd and by my time, S&S is supposed to be gone. just a kid trying to find out history about my proud Alma Mater. email with info at nuhurricane99@yahoo.com

pretty sure they arent.... have you seen the nuts bag cadets at this school? Lack of standards, pure disrespect to officers (both corps and commissioned cadre), no military bearing..... Look at simple physical standards, half the seniors and a bunch of juniors or morbidly obese... No disrespect if they are around, but if they maybe they should be fulfilling their purpose and not just holding onto a cool name. Don't get me wrong. I love norwich and its rich history, im proud to wear the ring. I truly hope they still exist and have full respect for them. I just dont see this corps lasting the 2019 plan due to political restraints and esprit de corps.

It is funny reading all this stuff. I will say this. Some of this is true, most of it not. Please don't put people's names on here. It doesn't hurt being S & S after graduating. You would be suprised. nice to see another rugger on here, The current state of the school is bad. I believe there is going to be another corps cleansing soon, with the rise in tuition, and slowly they are going after the special units like rangers, arty, and im sure others. it would be nice to see the alumni reach out to current students who express an inrest in trying to get the school back on track, Kelly is gone after this year, its kinda sad to see him go, but there is a need more than ever to get this school back on track, because the people in charge are going to make the Birth place of ROTC into a Virginia Tech with the NUCC as a "nice club" let us help make this berter

Not a lot of action on this page recently. Just thought I'd mention the Randall Miller book on Norwich that he released a few months ago. It covers some stuff about Skull and Swords as well as a big section on the Night Riders. Look it up if you haven't already.
The thing I find most interesting is that ENB or Ernest Buffum never died in 1918 or whatever year it was, as many of the 192s had been led to believe. To me, this means that the Night Rider oath and foundation has been false all these years. Not to say that is a complete tarnish of the group. I just think it's a bit strange that a huge part of there folklore and spirit has been proven to be false.
Perhaps I disagreeessment is wrong and there is more to it than that.

Exactly why the 192 tradition is founded on falsehood. The only society on campus for the good of this university is the 572.
Be Faithful To The Past.

S&S were glorified bail bondsmen in the period of at least 1979-81. In fact the "secret" society really had no affect on the corps of cadets. In 78-79 it was a very rough year for the corps. At the S&S parade at the end of that year, the Regimental Staff was laughing as they named all the new members (79-80) before they were announced. Let's see we had to have a football player, a hockey player, a guy going in the Marines, two or three "pinheads" who talked the talk but couldn't walk the walk, and the staff was 100% on the money making the picks. At that point everyone knew it was a joke and who you knew not your loyalty to the school.

Found this post my rook year, but took a major look at it more this year. I have a major history interest when it comes to Norwich history. Reading all these posts from start to finish the past week has gotten me really curious about everything, S&S, KR, LOS and everything having to do with their history. Repeating what quite a few people have said, I believe that history is should not be forgotten and it should be preserved. Most freshmen this year had no idea about the existence of Tank platoon or MP's because it was taken out of their rook books. I really want to learn all their is about the past, because there probably can be some great lessons learned from past, both learning from mistakes and keeping ahold of traditions. Also to put out there about people not believing in ghosts on campus, they do exist. Had my own paranormal experience last year with a ghost that has only been passed down by word of mouth. The image will forever be burned into my memory. As well as the ghost, with rook buddies last year we discovered one entrance to the tunnels, but I believe it is also blocked off if memory serves. But reading about all these posts makes me even more eager to want to learn about the history of NU and the history of all who have passed through this University. If anyone would ever like to tell stories whether it be about societies or not, I would more than willing to listen, the past two alumni weekends I have talked with alumni from various years, as well with an alum from my hometown and love every story they tell. One quote that I live by is, "I will remain faithful to the past, and to those who will make our future."

LET IT LIE.... SWORDS/RIDERS are not dead, simply in the shadows and biding their time until the moment for their return has come.

The clubs served a purpose, and that purpose is not dead. The corps is a tradition, but that tradition changes over the years. I was not in the club, not being on the (ever loosing) FB team, or shooting blanks out of cannons it was never going to happen. 15 years off the hill, and really it doesn't matter. I loved the traditions, loved being a billy-goat, but I transferred and therefore lost my membership. I left the WIC for another school, and was invited to be in another group. As a Sphinx I respect the SS of Norwich all the more. Ride on brothers.

Isn't it a little ironic that NU99GTE would post something like that. I guess he/she must not know anything....y'know...considering that he/she is indeed speaking. And this goes for any ironic postings on this forum regarding "those that know, do not speak". nothing but a complete contradiction unto itself.
By the way.... just so folks are clear: G.T.E. = Gators To the End. Not another secret society... Merely a member of Alpha company. At least when it existed. Usually results in an over inflated ego in my experience...something about being the first company behind HQ when on parade is my guess.
