I was at the 'wich when skull and swords was there. Actually my rook roommate became one. Also when you were a rook, you had a meeting with them in the auditorium. The 572, was rumored to be the initials to some dead kid, but I personally doubt it. As for the Tunnels they do exist. I remeber it was between either my soph-Jr of jr-senior year that we got a letter at our houses that stated Alumni Hall was renivated and that new steam lines where added to some of the buildings using the "seceret tunnels"

Skull and Swords, the honorable society of men that attended Norwich University for nearly 100 years, no longer exists. The history and the secret die with the 8 final members who have vowed to never perpetuate another class of men to go through the hell that we endured in our final year at Norwich.

I would wonder that when a new administration enters into the picture if you would then try to bring back skull and swords. They did do good for cadets that got themselves in a jam.

I remember the bonesman pounding on another's door asking "Do they need bail?" If Cadets did not act like fools in Burlington, there would not be a need. Yet before you reply I had a classmate ask for help to get home due to a medical emergency in his family, and was denied help. All they told him was "The best we can do for you is emergency leave."

There was no longer an automatic MP when the "chosen one" in the Freshman class of 1997 was wrongly accused of smoking marijuana and then the automatic of having an MP was stopped after hi...too bad-he was a great guy

(stumbled on this thought I would share) I went to NU and flunked out and then flunked out of another school and finally got my a$$ in gear and finished college. But during my time there (I didn't finish 2 years) I ran into a bunch of S&S and I thought I would share. I was friendly w/ 3 one the pres. my rook year and the other the MP. Nice guys . good and honorable who gave good advice (some of it today I still carry with me.) the third was cadre for me. My obseration was that they beat the crap out of them (new members) for a while that was obvious buises, tired, . Also saw the future MP member that year (which was an open secret) w/ buises and his arm in a sling. but one thing I will add most of these guys were tough. my cadre was one of the toughest guys I have met, and the others were just as tough. my last memory has to do w/ Jr ring weekend. we were lined up and they announced all the names and and we marched around and what stays with me is that we were told look around at the "old bones" who come back . and as we marched around the U P I saw what looked like some of the toughest looking guys I have ever seen. kind of funny what stays with you. I had alott of memories of NU and most of them are of stuff like this. definitly wasn't hittin the books. maybe I will come back and share a couple of more stories in the future. PS I recall that the restraunt they ate at in Bostonwas the union Oyster House

572. 572 stands for the 1857 Chapter 2.

Can anyone tell me what the 1857 chapter 2 means? I know the 322 of Skull and Bones is supposed to mean 1832, Chapter 2, in that it started in 1832 and was the off shoot of a German organization, thus Chapter 2. Is S&W an offshoot of Theta Chi? Theta Chi started in 1856. Or something else? I have a Norwich yearbook from 1895, and Theta is in it but no S&W. Did they start, at least openly, after Theta was kicked off campus, which I believe was 1960? 1957 would fit the 572, and is within the 4 year period a cadet graduating in 1960 or '61 would have attended Norwich. I'm just curious, but would appreciate any insight.

Chet, I am suspecting that you mean S&S, not S&W. While Smith & Wesson also got it's start in the 1850's, I'm guessing you mean Bones. If that isn't the case, who is S&W? -Berube

As for 572, it is rumored that it stands for "Lawrence R Stillman" who was killed by the night riders hence LRS.
The LRS is the 5th, then 7th, and then 2nd letters of
Skullandswords = skul L and swo R d S 5 7 2 for 572, it is rumored that it stans for "Lawrence R Stillman" who was killed by the night riders.
I personally saw a library book in a S&S shrine in a member's room that was called "History of Secret Societies"
The library number at the bottom of the binder was "572"
It was an old book. I have never seen one again.
I am curious, I bet that the Skull and Swords has Masonic roots.
The Masonic rituals are very similar. It is either Masonic or some Masons at Norwich copied them and started the Skull and Swords.

I know that later members had a skull and swords tatoo on their upper right thigh... Each one was different (might have been a lineage thing...). I think they got the tats in New Hampshire. I don't know when it started.
