To any current members of S&S or anyone who can point me in the right direction,
To any Alumni who I may have gotten a chance to talk to during the recent 2017 alumni weekend, I was one of the kids wearing a uniform from throughout the years at the alumni lunch; specifically the 1870's uniform. If you do by chance remember me, fantastic; if not please feel free to send me a message. I am a recruit who thought that there was going to be more of a challenge upon my arrival here, I was regretfully mistaken. There is a lot more to this school than what we are now being taught. I want to be the one that makes the change and I am willing to do anything to accomplish this task. I found it odd that The cadets here know next to nothing about the generations of students that have walked the same halls as them. Sure we know of the important dates, and some of the great Generals and Admirals that have come before us, but I feel that is driven into our heads not out of respect of the past, but merely to fill training time during the day. People here often say that the corps is dying, corrupted by the Commandants and political pressures. I like to believe that history is cyclical, and that the decline of esprit de corps is only temporary. I'm not arguing that the past was perfect, as those before me clearly expressed that there were some rough patches in the road. I'm just pointing out that if there was a time for the Corps to make a return to the old way, now would be the right time. The reason behind my post is because after the hours of research I have put into in to finding out more has come to halt merely because I don't even know where to start. The Skull and Swords Society beyond fascinating, I hope that this group has to still exist here on campus. Just like this group I yearn to keep Norwich a great place for years to come. I would love to learn more about this group of noble men who have carried such a burden. I understand that those of you are reluctant to include outsiders in the organization. I also understand anything you say to me can be a dangerous thing to do, but I give you my word this information will not be published, nor shared by even the closest of my brothers here. I would love to hear from any of you that would reach out, but hold my tongue an important way to keep an organization from being poisoned by the doubt and rumors of outsiders To be clear, I seek no information that would damage the reputation of the organization. All I wish is to continue this honorable tradition and take in all information unless you seem I am unworthy. I wish that you give me help or even want me to figure it out on my own, just please give me the right steps and paths to get there.
You can contact me at norwichrecruit21@gmail.com, I have created it specifically for this purpose and will check it consistently. I am also a current recruit here if you wish to visit me to discuss these matters in person you can reach out to me on my email and we can set something up to meet on campus. Thank you.

Is anyone still active in this forum?
I stop in around once a day, but I am probably the only registered account. The statistics at the bottom of the front page are showing that people are stopping by without logging in (if any of them registered for accounts here) and that number always spikes when there's a new post in this thread, so word does go around and people are coming to the site.
Facebook along with Facebook Groups mostly killed bulletin boards, but you still kind of have to use a real name on there. Here, not so much, so I don't see the need for the site going anywhere. There's no money being paid by the admins to keep this running and the ads on the pages generate the money to keep ProBoards free. I barely have to do any administration on here, so there's no complaints from me seeing that nobody posts day after day.

Was on the Hill from 96-98... My Rook year the S&S were still in full control of the UP, I had to leave due to costs of my education there (being out of state). But, I remember very vividly my entire Class being visited by the S&S one night (late late one night) due to an issue that happened on the Hill with one of our classmates. We were summoned to the lines and were told to assume the position (ie, get on our faces - push-up style) and were then lectured by a few of the members. We only saw their feet and were not allowed to look up as to identify the upperclassmen. They got the info they needed and the matter was dealt with. Later that year, I was passed on the "Red Lyre" out of Band Co., which found a new home before my departure. Current Rooks and Cadet's may find this an interesting crumb trail into the History at the 'Wic! A History many may need to rekindle in these darker days Norwich Matters by Randall H. Miller

What is a "red lyre"? I only know of two different lyre colors currently circulating in the company. I'm a current Zoobie.

I'm sure if you went by the "Norwich restaraunt" in Boston Sat night 12/9 that would be the second Saturday in December. It is we'll known many s&s members hold their annual meeting there. Probably not the best idea to go snooping around that group.

S&S were glorified bail bondsmen in the period of at least 1979-81. In fact the "secret" society really had no affect on the corps of cadets. In 78-79 it was a very rough year for the corps. At the S&S parade at the end of that year, the Regimental Staff was laughing as they named all the new members (79-80) before they were announced. Let's see we had to have a football player, a hockey player, a guy going in the Marines, two or three "pinheads" who talked the talk but couldn't walk the walk, and the staff was 100% on the money making the picks. At that point everyone knew it was a joke and who you knew not your loyalty to the school. -I've read more of the thread since my last visit and wanted to relate an incident from the past. And as an aside, Nu Old School, you and I might know each other. For the record, when I was Rook, the '79-'80 crop of S&S saved my a$$ one night up in Montpelier. Not too long after being recognized (if memory serves we didn't get recognized until almost February that year) three of us rooks got into a for real, seriously life-threatening bind in Montpelier. The S&S phone number was in the back of our pink rook books, we dialed it, and I'm here today because of it. We were in civies, and thank God one of us had a rook book with us. As for my statement above about the S&S never leaving: I stand by it but will not elaborate. I am glad they could help you and I likely even know about the incident. I don't disagree that they remain underground. I will just say that at that time they mainly were bails bondsmen and tried to keep the University reputation pristine by covering up and greasing the skids unofficially. Not a bad thing just not some super secret power group. In fact, they tried to run interference on occasion for friends where the individual was facing Honor or Board hearings having nothing to do with protecting the reputation of the university. The sad thing was we knew there would be one hockey player, one football player, one MP, one cadet going in the Marines, etc. you pretty much knew who was going to be picked pre-selection.

What part? 78-79 being a rough year where the fire road behind Hawkins and Dodge was covered with broken beer bottles tossed out of windows almost every night or the big bonfire on the UP where a guy who was an absolute known piece of crap took a swing at the Commandant, or all the other stuff that went down that year where S&S couldn't or wouldn't address any of the cadets behind the scenes? Or the fact Regimental Staff that Spring picked every member at the ceremony based on who they knew or were (football, hockey, Marine, etc.) not simply based on loyalty to the school? Don't get me wrong they bailed out kids in trouble, did a good job keeping the school's name clean and frankly were for the most part really good guys. But to say they were a secret society while they were having a public induction ceremony on the UP is a joke, or that they solved problems in the corps beyond those outside of campus confines is for the most part, in my opinion, wrong. Good guys, provided a service, just not some super powered, secret society saving the University in the dark of night.

Probably not the best idea to go snooping around that group. Please... It's not like it's a meeting of CIA covert operators, it's former football players and a few other 'cool kids' reliving their glory days at Wic. Some are nice guys, others not so much. The hype behind them, and a bunch of 21 year olds attempting to live up to that hype is why they were booted in the 1st place. The corps XO who lost his commission because of S&S activities must think back about those times and realize what a fool he was.

I can’t believe this forum exists, but I’m happy it does. I went to The Wic, The Hill....whatever you want to call it. I was exposed to all the societies. I joined and wrote all of it down. I know all the secrets and the lies. It’s true, Bones existed. The Nightriders, The Pirates, The Crow, The Lost Boys, The Rose, The Regulators... all of them live on somewhere. However, because The Hill is now soft, they all died off. No one knows the real story.
But they will.

Pal,
(LOS 314)
You are not LOS and whatever that crap you wrote above is just that, crap. "Pirates, Crow, Lost Boys, The Rose, Regulators" You may know movies and are close to one name (and as for the Regulators they came and went decades and decades ago, by design (they are also not the name you are close to))
You did not join anything nor anyone, nice try. "They all died off" Moron.

The majority of this thread speaks of nothing but rumors and lies. If you have to ask and make things up years sometimes decades after your time at Norwich, you need to let it go. If you are a member you you don’t need to a ask. What I will say is that if it was bullnuts I wouldn’t be taking the time to write a response 22 years after my departure from the Wick. Membership extends far beyond Vermont but know that anyone with real knowledge of what is kept sacred will never be posted on the internet or to anyone outside of our organization. Hope all alumni stay well.
