This program was born at Norwich University, and remains an annual event on campus that brings world-class authors to the Northfield, Vt. campus for a few days to interact with the students.

To expose students, faculty, and the general public to the works and views of authors, historians, journalists and national figures to educate, enlighten and inspire.
Background
Founded in 1996 by and renamed in memory of the late Ambassador William E. Colby in 1997, the Colby Symposium has brought over fifty top authors, historians, filmmakers to the Norwich University in Northfield, VT for a two-day residency to participate in open forums, lectures and other related functions.
In 1997, Vermont Public Television taped the public session for broadcast-an association that continued for three years.
In 1998, the Symposium established a partnership with the Eric Friedheim Library of the National Press Club in Washington, D. C. to co-produce events at the Press Club for area alumni, club members and the general public.
The 2002 public session was broadcast on a tape delayed basis on the 16 state-wide Adelphia cable network and featured a live satellite phone interview from Afghanistan with Army Times Senior Writer, Sean Naylor.
In October 2002, the Symposium headquarters moved to Chicago to the soon to be completed The Pritzker Military Library.
A new series of programs in the Chicago area are being planned in 2004. "
