This came about because of a response one of my rook buddies had to an article in the "What's New @ NU!" email newsletter on Nov 5, 2003. I was asked to post it and see if anyone has heard anything about the University side of the rings being changed to reflect the official change. Anyone heard anything?

__________
"I Will Try!" At the recent meeting of the Norwich University Board of Trustees, held on Norwich's Northfield, Vermont, campus, the Board approved the designation of "I Will Try!" as the official motto of the University. The previously accepted motto of "Essayons!", which for a number of years had been incorrectly attributed to former Norwich President Colonel Truman Bishop Ransom, was adopted by the Board in the early 70s. Thanks to extensive research undertaken by Professor Gary Lord, it was discovered Colonel Ransom did not, in fact, coin the expression "Essayons!" and that "I Will Try!" has been a part of the Norwich tradition since the 1830s. Given his findings, the Board of Trustees agreed to reinstate "I Will Try!" to its rightful place at Norwich. Our thanks to Professor Lord for his detailed research into our history and to the Board of Trustees for their decision to reinstate such an integral part of Norwich history and tradition.

The new rings now say i will try on the university side. I happen to like that mine says essayons. While essayons doens't translate directly as our motto, everyone was aware of that, and it became accepted the way it was.

They should let this years class choose what they want on it by doing a class wide vote, seems like it would be the only fair way

Does anyone know how much you get off the price of your ring if you are on the ring committee?

The only tradition that exists today at Norwich University that existed in 1819 is the tradition of "THINGS CHANGE....."
Speak to alums of various years and you'll learn that what you think is a tradition today, wasn't done years ago and what was done years ago, no longer is remembered except by us old farts.
