Primarily it is in place so that we don't have to make up rules as we go along. Being that we are not aiming at one slice of school activities, we will see dissenting viewpoints and we wanted to state up front what is acceptable and what is not. Some of the posting rules are in place to prevent anonymous users from starting derogatory or inflamatory threads. Since I'm not sure which part of the rules you wre referring to this is the best I can do.

If there was a way that you could recruit more members (espically alumni) then this site would take off. again, jsut wanted to say thanks for it.

If you log in and go to your "Profile," you can modify your profile and add your MSN Messenger screen name. Let me know if you're having trouble doing this.

In response to "NUCC99":
I don't think we use any "tactics" here. Our reasons for doing this are well-explained in this section...but I will elaborate further for your benefit and that of anyone else reading this.
We simply want to inform people that they are responsible --yes, legally-- for what they say in this and any public forum. If they want to slander Norwich, that is their decision, but we, the administrators of this site, do not want to be held responsible or liable for the comments of others if they are deemed to be slanderous or libelous. We simply want to provide a forum for discussion.
The university can --and has-- threatened to take legal action against online forums for continuing to host the comments of people that were deemed to be slanderous. We want people to know that this can --and does-- happen, and to proceed with caution if they are angry and want to vent.
Online forums and the print media are not given carte blanche rights to the confidentiality of their sources or members. --We are informing you that we can be forced by a court of law to reveal your identity should Norwich University or anyone you post about desire to sue you for slander or libel. If we are ordered to do so, and we do, you can sue US for revealing that identity, and if we don't, we can be fined. --We are putting ourselves out of the middle, and placing the slander/libel responsibility upon YOU. While we want to provide a forum for ALL opinions--even the disgruntled ones-- we don't want this forum to shut down due to irresponsible use.
I don't think we are using "tactics," or are "on attack to suppress feedback," as we have been accused here and at Cadetparents.com. I think we're taking the steps to protect ourselves and our posters.
Thanks, Amanda Tracy NU'02

I've done some looking around and as far as I can tell, we can't set an icon for MSN. I may not have looked in the right place, but I didn't find an option for MSN. That might be controlled by Proboards.com, however, AOL IM, Yahoo!, and ICQ will show the icons. One thing I did discover with the MSN IM profile setting, is that you have to specify the full address of the account, not just the name before the "@" sign.
For example, just "MSN_IM_user" won't be accepted, but when you specify "MSN_IM_user@hotmail.com" the nickname will be accepted. I believe this is due to MSN allowing users to sign up accounts that are not @msn.com or @hotmail.com.

You need to get word out about this place, I have told all of my rookbuddies, maybe you could put the word out and make this an offical message board?

Hey Private2004, welcome! I'd really like to make this an "official" board, but in order to do that, the university would have to endorse this forum. That's something that would require a lot of stringent approval, and we might possibly have to change some of the policies and procedures here. There's a lot of things we can do here that we might not be able to do if this becomes an official board. --Norwich would be responsible for the content, and may have to monitor it with stricter guidelines than we do. (Think of all the restrictions put on training and drugs, which some might argue is a good thing, to reduce the university's liability.) While the policies at Norwich are usually good for the safety of students and the school, excessive policy is not always to the benefit of freedom of expression. Thanks for helping us to promote the site. The "grassroots" support you have given us will help us out tremendously, and we appreciate it very much. If you can continue to do this...well, it's a small campus. Word will get out. -Amanda

Hi everyone,
I thought I'd ask for some input regarding topics and information available on these message boards.
What kind of information would you like for us to provide? Any topics you'd like to see opened for discussion?
-Amanda
