Going head-to-head against more than 97 teams from 50 schools entered in the Tulane University Mardi Gras Drill Competition, the Shock Platoon took 2nd place in squad basic and 2nd place in platoon armed regulation. Junior Matthew Angoy was awarded 3rd place in the individual trick exhibition. For the second year in a row, the Norwich University color guard won 1st place in the color guard category. Major Russ Holden, faculty advisor for the drill team, noted that the students performed well against some stiff competition. "The team was just amazing," Holden said. "They really impressed a lot of people down there." Holden said there were several alumni who made a special trip to New Orleans to support the drill team, including William Susmann, Jr. '66; Ken and Lee Dostie '69; Kevin Gorman '74; William Kingman '80; and Kate Moskal '95. "Our thanks go out to these alums," Holden said. "Their presence sure meant a lot to the cadets." Later this spring, Shock Platoon will be competing at the Villanova Drill Competition as well as the RPI Drill Competition. Last November, at the 25th annual Cornell University Invitational Drill Competition in Ithaca, N.Y., the Norwich University Shock Platoon placed first overall.
